Types of Batteries Used by Electric Vehicles at Club Car

If you’re considering purchasing an electric vehicle, it’s important to know what types of batteries are available. Batteries are the energy source that power your Club Car vehicle or golf cart.

Battery type can have a direct impact on your driving experience. Depending on your usage, you may need to choose a battery with a higher capacity than others.

Deep Cycle Batteries

These batteries are made up of negative electrodes (anodes), positive electrodes (cathodes) and separators between them. A combination of water and acid is also mixed in as an electrolyte.

Traditional lead acid batteries are wet-flooded and require routine checks of electrolyte levels to ensure safe operation. These can be time consuming, especially if you own more than one battery.

Lithium power offers more energy, a faster recharge time, built-in safety features including over charge protection, over discharge protection, over heating protection and short circuit protection. These benefits add up to better performance and longer battery life.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries are the most widely used type of rechargeable battery in use today. They are found in portable consumer electronics and are also used to power electric vehicles.

These batteries have a number of advantages including high energy density, low self-discharge rate, excellent high-temperature performance and are durable enough to handle long periods of storage. Because of these attributes, they are a popular choice for EVs.

However, they are not perfect. While they are safe, lithium ion batteries require specific care when charging and discharging.

There are three main types of lithium ion batteries: cylindrical, prismatic and pouch-type. Cylindrical and prismatic batteries are molded into hard casings, whereas pouch-types contain flexible foils that are protected by thin metal bags.

All three have their pros and cons. For example, cylindrical cells are less expensive and easier to manufacture, but they are not ideal for delivering the maximum amount of power during accelerations. On the other hand, pouch-types are much lighter, allowing them to be packed more densely than cylindrical cells.

Maintenance Free Batteries

Unlike traditional golf cart batteries, Club Car electric vehicles don’t require regular maintenance to keep them in peak condition and fully charged. That makes them perfect for businesses and organizations looking to cut costs and increase productivity with low-maintenance, high-performance electric vehicles.

AGM or absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries contain sponge-like fiberglass separators between lead plates that absorb the electrolyte. This makes them safer and more durable than flooded lead-acid batteries.

Flooded lead-acid batteries, the most common type of vehicle battery, contain a liquid electrolyte that reacts with lead plates to power the battery. However, they can spill if exposed to extreme temperatures or high levels of vibrations.

Lithium-ion batteries are another option for LEVs, but they have a higher cost and can be prone to power roll-off. It’s best to monitor their life with a power gauge or meter, so you know when it’s time for replacement. Batteries should be load-tested at least once a year to ensure they have enough power to safely operate your vehicle.
